What Is an MMO Mouse?

An MMO mouse is a mouse that’s tailor-made for MMORPG use. MMORPGs are a whole different ballpark compared to other games. There are a lot of things to take into account, like skill timings, boss patterns, mob attacks, and more. Thus, being able to use both of your hands to do inputs is a necessary thing for MMORPG gamers. A normal, average mouse usually has three things: left and right mouse buttons and a roller. That’s it. However, an MMO mouse will have all these plus several additional buttons that players can tweak for their purposes. However, we’ll talk about those later. For now, let’s go over some of the best wireless MMO mouse models for MMORPG players to use.

8 Best Wireless MMO Mouse Models

MMO Mouse vs Regular Mouse

Starting the list is the SteelSeries Aerox 9 Wireless, a durable MMO/MOBA wireless mouse. Its main draw is its already lightweight and great dimensions, allowing players to do lots of fun stuff with it. The diamond-shaped cutouts are not only aesthetically pleasing but also give it less weight. Combine this with a 12-button side panel, the great sensors of the Aerox 5, being able to go either USB receiver or Bluetooth. Well, you got a hell of a treat right here. Overall, it’s a great mouse to go for when you’re an MMO Gamer due to the added accommodations that it gives you. Combine this with how comfortable it feels on your hand, and you’re usually good to go. The only thing that makes this mouse a bit of an oof is if your hands are smaller compared to the mouse itself. It’s a pretty big mouse, after all. Next on the list of the best wireless MMO mouse models is the Logitech G303 Shroud Edition, and this one is a pretty good mouse for a lot of games. Given that it’s made from a collaboration with pro streamer Shroud, you can vouch for its usage. Based on the G303 Daedalus Apex, it’s a lightweight and wireless mouse tailor-made for gamers everywhere. Its shape is great for users with a claw grip, and it’s suitable for most hand sizes. Aesthetics-wise, it’s great, but a bit understated compared to the SteelSeries Aerox 9. There’s no RGB lighting either, but you’re looking for function here, which the G303 Shroud gives in spades. However, it does run into the slight problem of the lack of buttons. Users only have 5 buttons to use with the G303 Shroud, which is a really big drop-off from the Aerox 9’s 16. This is due to the G303 Shroud being made for FPS games. However. MMO players can still make use of the G303 Shroud due to 2 reasons: the buttons are reprogrammable, has a low click latency, and it’s well-built. A go-to if you want to have a great mouse for not only FPS games but something you can use for MMO games as well. For those that like the Razer Naga Trinity but suffer from the fact that it’s a wired mouse, look no further than the Razer Naga Pro. It’s basically like the Naga Trinity with a few aesthetical tweaks. In addition to that, there’s also the fact that you can hot-swap the side plate to give the user more buttons. You can go for 2, 6, and 12 side plate variants in addition to the 8 base buttons the Razer Naga Pro gets. If you’re asking us, the Razer Naga Pro is Razer’s premier wireless MMO mouse. It’s a great tool for MMO players to do their raids and other MMO stuff in. The sheer versatility the ability to change side plates gives you alone is a main selling point for the Naga Pro. Last but not least, for our RGB fans out there, never fear. Because Razer added their signature Chroma RGB in the mouse as well. Functional, hot-swap capable, and RGB. A top-tier pick if you ask us. Next on the list is the Corsair DARK CORE RGB PRO wireless MMO mouse. This is Corsair’s entry into the MMO mouse battle, that’s also great for general gaming. It has a high max CPI and can be adjusted for the user. The mouse also has a low click latency and 2000Hz max polling. Combine this with the 8 reprogrammable buttons, and you can have quite a blast. However, it’s one of the heavier mice on this list and doesn’t give users the ability to optimize weight. It’s a comfortable mouse to use, though. It can be used with either palm, fingertip, or claw grips. Overall, if you’re looking for a mouse that can do both MMO and other games well while looking cool — then go for the Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro. The next one on this list is the Redragon M913, an excellent MMO Gaming mouse due to the 20 reprogrammable buttons. In addition to this, it’s super comfortable to use for both claw or palm grips and very well made. For the ones that want to program their mouse, the Redragon M913 also comes with software that allows for button reprogramming. The wide CPI range also makes it incredibly advantageous for MMO games and can be adjusted by 100 increments. However, it does suffer from a high click latency and a bit of inaccuracy on the sensors and can sometimes overshoot the set CPI. This is only apparent on fast/slow cursor movements, however, and it’s just as good as its competitors. Probably not helped by the fact that it’s a bit on the heavy side. However, if you’re looking for a great mouse, this one is at the top of the list. The next mouse we need to talk about is the Logitech G502 LIGHTSPEED. This mouse is a great option for MMO gaming due to the buttons being reprogrammable. Unlike the Redragon M913 though, it doesn’t have as many side buttons as an MMO player would want. However, the sheer reprogram ability, and the comfort of the form factor gives this mouse a great edge against its competition. In terms of performance, the mouse has low click latency and low lift-off distance, but not as low as other prominent gaming mice. However, if you can deal with that, then the Lightspeed might be up your alley. The ASUS ROG Spatha X is the next entry on this list, and it’s a pretty great mouse for MMO gamers to use. Its 12 buttons are all reprogrammable, though when compared to some of the mice on this list, 12 buttons is a bit of a letdown. However, the ASUS ROG Spatha X is a very sturdy mouse that also offers quite a bit of comfort. The form factor allows users a comfortable grip no matter the type, whether it be claw or palm. In terms of performance, you wouldn’t be disappointed as its low latency and precise CPI adjustments make it a mouse of great performance. However, the ROG Spatha X’s low lift-off distance isn’t as low as some gaming mice, but it’s very serviceable. Last but not least is the UtechSmart VENUS Pro, a wireless MMO gaming mouse with 19 buttons available. All of these buttons are reprogrammable, and the form factor is great. There’s even a comfortable thumb rest for medium to large hands that use claw or palm grips. Performance-wise, the UtechSmart VENUS Pro’s CPI range is pretty wide and can be adjusted in 100 increments. The lift-off distance is also low, which is great. However, its click latency is a bit on a large scale, which might turn off some buyers.   Now that we got a list of great wireless MMO mouse models, let’s talk about the differences between a regular mouse and an MMO mouse. Aside from the obvious extra buttons.

Macro Keys

Lots of MMORPG players use something called macros, which are commands that players record and execute with one button press. To do this, the commands need to be recorded by a program. Macros can also be used to do simple tasks like opening emails or browsers, entering texts, or inputting keystrokes. Due to how useful they are, macro keys are now incredibly prevalent not only in gaming but also in general use. Thus, a lot of gaming mice now come with software to edit the macro keys that their gaming mouse has. Pretty useful all told if you ask us. This is especially convenient when you have a gaming mouse like the Razer Naga Pro, which has 20 buttons max. You can usually find the installation of said software on the gaming mouse’s box.

Ergonomics

Next on this list is Ergonomics, which shouldn’t be surprising as having a mouse that fits your hand comfortably is a great feeling. This isn’t just for comfort, as hand and wrist pains are usually due to your mouse not being conformed to your hand. Luckily, gaming mouse creators know that gamers are going to be gaming all day, every day. So they design their gaming mouse for all-day gaming. They usually offer the user natural and comfortable grips and even come with thumb rests at the best of times no matter the grip. Also, they don’t tend to be flat, as using a flat mouse doesn’t keep your hand in a natural position. This leads to the aforementioned hand and wrist pains. In short, get good, ergonomic mice that fit in your hand properly depending on your grip. Your hand and wrist will thank you for it.

Polling Rates

Another thing to keep an eye on is a mouse’s polling rates, which are measured in hertz (Hz). This is how people determine how often a mouse reports its current position on your PC. A higher polling rate equals a more responsive mouse. Your regular mouse usually has around 125 Hz, which is considered pretty low for gamers. Not that it matters, as those mice tend to be general-use, and the input lag is pretty minimal. However, gaming mice and even most MMO mice would usually get around 500 Hz or more polling rates. 500 is usually enough for gamers, though some would like to have more than 1000 Hz. An example of this would be the Razer Viper 8K, which gives a whopping 8000 Hz polling rate. Do note that a higher polling rate means more CPU strain, so there’s a bit of give and take there.

Sensitivity

Now we go to the Sensitivity, which is measured through dots per inch (DPI). This tells users how fast a mouse cursor moves all over a PC screen. High-sensitivity mice move faster, and the opposite is true for low sensitivity. Regular mice tend to have around 1200 to 800 DPI. They’re pretty typical and don’t have any nifty shenanigans for gamers to use. For those kinds of mice, you need to change the DPI manually inside your PC, which is a bit of a hassle compared to gaming mice. For gaming mice, they usually have buttons on them that allow users to adjust DPI in the middle of usage. In addition to this, they have preset DPI settings that can start as high as 26K DPI, all the way down to 400. Mouse software like the ones provided by Razer and Corsair also has software that allows for DPI adjustments. But being able to adjust on the fly is a great thing to have.

Cost

Gaming mice are going to be more expensive compared to regular mice. However, you already saw the sheer amount of things that are taken into consideration for said gaming mice. Thus, you can see why this is the case. As you can tell, there are gaming mice that cost less than $100, like the Redragon M913. Of course, higher-end options will cost more but have more functions. It’s really up to the user, as most gaming mice are optimized for particular games like MMOs and FPS. If you’re not looking for a more hardcore gaming setup, then a normal mouse might be a good idea. However, if you’re playing hardcore MMOs and other games, then a gaming mouse might be necessary.

What to Look for When Buying an MMO Mouse

Price

As per usual, price is a really big factor when you’re looking for anything in general. When it comes to buying your MMO mouse this is readily apparent. If you’re an MMO player, you would want a mouse that can give lots of functions, while not hampering performance. However, always keep an eye on your budget and don’t overspend. If you’re being frugal, no need to worry, as there are MMO gaming mice that cost less than $100, which we showcased here.

Performance

Performance is of course, incredibly important when it comes to gaming mice. This is especially true for gaming mice due to the sheer strain you’re going to put them through. For example, playing an MMORPG like Final Fantasy XIV. You’re in a tough raid, and you’re on the home stretch. You try to press something, and it takes a few moments to register, which gives the boss enough time to wipe your whole team. Now many things can cause this. Lag is the more obvious route that players would go for when that happens. However, there are also times when your mouse needs to register so many inputs that it just can’t take it anymore. When that time comes, you probably should change your mouse as it’s not going to take any more MMORPG combat.

DPI, Hz, and You

The performance of a mouse is going to be something of great import to any gamer. Thus, a lot of users will get a mouse with great DPI and Hz, AKA Mouse Sensitivity and Polling Rates. Gaming mice will usually give players the ability to tweak these 2 values according to their tastes, which is great. However, keeping a close eye on the two of them while gaming is a good thing to do to get great performance. After all, if you just bought a gaming mouse, you’re going to have to get used to it. But eventually, you will want to tweak it according to your tastes. Thus, being able to tweak DPI and Hz values is a good thing to have when taking performance into account.

Button Layout

MMO players will want to have a great button layout for their gaming mice. Having a good button layout may be a bigger draw than great DPI and Hz. This is because MMO players tend to go the distance when it comes to macros and buttons. And having the option to use not only the keyboard but also the mouse for inputs is a big thing for them. You can call it button mashing, true. But having extra buttons on your right hand is also great for inputting things like opening specific browsers/websites. Or closing a tab when your parents are coming into your room. However, having a great button layout will lead to a discussion on the mouse’s overall look and feel. After all, if your mouse doesn’t feel comfortable to use, you’ll have a huge problem. Ergonomics is a thing and it’s very important, and making sure that the button layout conforms to the ergonomics portion is a necessary thing to do.
